Topic description
This topic considers rehabilitation for musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limb and spine, developing student awareness of recent research in this field and discusses how to best synthesise this knowledge into clinical application.

Students are offered the opportunity to choose the focus of assessment tasks to ensure relevance to their own clinical practice.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  1. Review and update student knowledge of select upper limb and spine musculoskeletal disorder incidence, aetiology, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary management and rehabilitation
  2. Review and critically appraise current interventions used in the rehabilitation of people with upper limb and spinal musculoskeletal disorders
  3. Apply evidence based interventions to current upper limb and spinal musculoskeletal rehabilitation practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Critically appraise the literature in relation to best practice around musculoskeletal rehabilitation to evaluate its evidence base
  2. Initiate and plan a detailed best-practice rehabilitation plan for an individual undergoing rehabilitation for an upper limb or spinal musculoskeletal condition
  3. Critically appraise their own clinical practice to reflect on the service provided.
