Assignments; Tutorial Participation

The topic addresses the principles of rehabilitation for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) by following the journeys of three different individuals through phases of their injuries: acute management, potential complications, early transition to rehabilitation, in-patient rehabilitation, community integration and lifelong management issues. It aims to provide students with the opportunity to examine complex rehabilitation issues by participating in self-learning exercises and discussion forums, which includes investigation of their local health services.

This topic aims to provide an opportunity for students to increase their understanding of the key principles in the rehabilitation of an adult with Spinal Cord Injury

On completion of the topic, students will be expected to be able to:

• Provide a basic description of acute management of SCI

• Outline the classification, types and patterns of SCI

• Identify and manage potential complications of SCI

• Identify and manage issues confronting people with SCI as they make their transitions along the continuum

• Develop a rehabilitation plan, incorporating an interdisciplinary approach, for a designated case study of a person with SCI

• Describe the potential physical and psychosocial needs of people with SCI

• Identify and utilise internationally recognised assessment tools and outcome measures in SCI rehabilitation

• Identify and manage potential long-term issues using a designated case study of a person with SCI
