Topic description
This topic gives students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge of clinical neuroscience and motor control in the physical rehabilitation of people with neurological conditions. Students will complete a number of advanced clinical competencies in relation to: Neurological & Functional assessment, diagnosis of impairment, goal setting, treatment design/intervention, communication and clinical reasoning. In addition students will develop their own personal plans for specialisation and professional leadership in the area of Neurological Physiotherapy. This topic involves some online discussions, clinical case studies, and a two week clinical placement at the Repatriation General Hospital in Adelaide. This placement includes masterclass tutorials and the completion of advanced competencies while practicing as an advanced clinician within the hospital. Before commencement of this topic, students must be registered to practice physiotherapy in Australia and have an up to date Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate. International students must obtain a ‘limited registration’ from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
Educational aims
This topic aims to give students the opportunity to demonstrate and further develop advanced skills in the area of Neurological Physiotherapy.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Apply theoretical knowledge on neuroanatomical and neurophysiology relating to specific neurological conditions.

  • Complete a comprehensive neurological and functional assessment.

  • Interpret findings to develop a diagnosis and working hypothesis regarding presenting signs and symptoms.

  • Effectively set rehabilitation goals in conjunction with the patient and set specific short and long-term NeuroPhysiotherapy goals.

  • Choose relevant outcome measures when appropriate.

  • Communicate effectively with the patient, family/primary caregivers and multidisciplinary team.

  • Plan an effective intervention, which incorporates both theoretical knowledge of motor control and available clinical evidence.

  • Provide and prescribe safe, effective treatment interventions.

  • Monitor and re-assess treatment outcomes using a reflective clinical reasoning process and adjust accordingly.

  • Document assessment findings and treatment progress.

  • Develop new ideas, and identify new concepts that could be developed and researched.

  • Provide education to both a physiotherapy and multidisciplinary audience on a clinical topic that relates to NeuroPhysiotherapy.

  • Identify and advocate for areas where NeuroPhysiotherapy can influence service delivery, practice standards and policy development.
