This topic gives students the opportunity to develop an understanding of specialist theoretical knowledge of clinical neuroscience and apply to the rehabilitation of people with neurological conditions. Students will complete a number of advanced clinical competencies in relation to: Assessment of impairment, goal setting, treatment design/intervention, communication and clinical reasoning of neurological occupational therapy.

In addition students will develop their own personal plans for specialisation and professional leadership in the area of Neurological Occupational Therapy. This topic involves online discussions, clinical case studies, masterclass tutorials and workshops and a 2-week clinical placement at the Repatriation General Hospital in Adelaide, and the completion of advanced competencies while practicing as an advanced clinician within the hospital.

Before commencement of this topic, students must be registered to practice occupational therapy in Australia and have an up to date Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate. International students must obtain a 'limited registration' from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

This topic aims to give students the opportunity to demonstrate and further develop advanced skills in the area of Neurological Occupational Therapy.

At the completion of this topic students will be able to:

• Apply theoretical knowledge on neuroanatomical and neurophysiology relating to specific neurological conditions.

• Complete a comprehensive assessment, plan effective intervention based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model. incorporating both theoretical knowledge and available clinical evidence.

• Effectively set specific short and long-term rehabilitation goals in conjunction with the patient.

• Communicate effectively with the patient, family/primary caregivers and multidisciplinary team.

• Monitor and re-assess treatment outcomes using a reflective clinical reasoning process and adjust accordingly.

• Document assessment findings and treatment progress.

• Develop new ideas, and identify new concepts that could be developed and researched.

• Provide education to both a multidisciplinary audience on a specialist clinical topic that relates to Neurological Occupational Therapy.
