This topic is the first of two specialty core topics providing the foundational knowledge and skills for the transition to medical practice in the unique environmental and cultural context of remote and Indigenous settings. The topic includes maternal and child health, acute infectious diseases and communicable disease management principles. It also gives an overview of global health disparity due to tropical diseases and their impact in remote Australia. The topic is contextualised to remote practice by exploring the social determinants of health and illness experienced by Australian Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people living in remote communities.

The aim of this topic is to prepare medical practitioners to manage maternal and child health, acute infectious and communicable disease in remote Indigenous communities.

Upon completion of the topic, students will be able to:-

• diagnose, treat and manage common paediatric problems and women’s health issues within their own practice

• describe the influence of the social determinants of health on Indigenous child health and disease prevention and health promotion principles and practice

• organise, manage and implement community child health programs within their local district

• identify complex paediatric problems and institute management with specialist paediatrician support

• demonstrate the ability to assess, manage and prevent domestic violence and child abuse

• demonstrate the ability to build networks of support/resource people for consultations and know when to use them

• demonstrate the ability to work as part of an interprofessional team and with the community to provide holistic care

• organise, manage and implement community maternal and child health programs

• identify complex antenatal and post natal issues and institute management with specialist support as required

• recognise and diagnose communicable disease and implement appropriate disease control measure

• recognise groups at high risk of infectious disease and implement appropriate strategies for prevention and management

• outline the principles underlying the use of preventative strategies (active and passive immunisation and chemo prophylaxis) in the control of communicable diseases

• describe the concepts of epidemic potential and heard immunity in relation to the spread of disease.
