This topic provides health professionals with an opportunity to develop skills and knowledge necessary to successfully design and manage projects that are relevant to isolated, remote and Indigenous health contexts worldwide. A simple conceptual model for project management is presented and considered in the light of community development approaches. Project plans and known outcomes from two projects highly relevant to remote and Indigenous Primary Health Care services are critically analysed.

The aim of this topic is to develop students’ knowledge, skills and attitudes for planning, implementing and evaluating projects within a Primary Health Care framework. Local and international examples are used to provide an opportunity for students to apply community development principles to profession specific practice within isolated, remote and Indigenous contexts where they work or plan to work in the future.

On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

Identify ways in which managers and practitioners may become involved in projects in a variety of remote and Indigenous Primary Health Care settings locally, nationally and internationally
Develop a comprehensive understanding of the history and contemporary application of project management theory including key elements of projects, funding considerations, key stages in the life of the project, and communication strategies across the duration of the project
Differentiate between outputs and outcomes from projects and apply this knowledge to identify key factors with the potential to impact on project outcomes and outputs in a Remote and Indigenous context
Assess the importance of the local, national and international context of a project
Reflect on the implications of a community development-orientated approach to project management including critical issues such as capacity strengthening, sustainability and partnerships and the role of a project manager
Reflect on the principles of cultural safety and discuss how these could be applied or strengthened to improve outcomes of projects relating to improving Indigenous health in remote contexts
