Topic description
This topic examines the basic conceptual premises and problematics at work in cross-cultural media of various kinds. The topic covers a range of representations, from classical and contemporary ethnographic media to post-modern travelogues to Hollywood images of the native, in an attempt to familiarise students with aspects of cross-cultural and ethnographic discourse. Readings will draw from cultural studies of race and ethnicity as well as from media studies.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • afford students an opportunity to examine a range of cross-cultural media
  • foster a chance for students to become familiar with the aims, aspirations, and aesthetic choices of visual ethnographies
  • develop students’ skills in engaging with relevant academic texts and discourses
  • encourage students to improve their research skills and use of a variety of source texts
  • develop students’ ability to present their learning both orally and in writing
  • ensure that students are able to participate actively and engage constructively in tutorial activities
  • develop students’ ability to engage in collaborative activity
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will have demonstrated:

  • a familiarity with cross-cultural media of various sorts
  • the ability to articulate an understanding of the aims, aspirations, and aesthetics of visual ethnography
  • skills in productively engaging with, and critiquing relevant academic texts and discourses
  • the ability to interpret, compose and sustain a consistent and coherent critical analysis, both orally and in writing
  • the ability to work effectively in collaborative settings
