Topic description
This topic investigates the aesthetics and production-consumption contexts of politically oppositional, aesthetically emergent, and/or low- or micro-budget media. The precise focus will vary from year to year. Forms covered could include women’s media, activist expressions, queer voices, auto-ethnographies, media dystopias. Issues to be covered include the aesthetic innovations and political aspirations of the form in question.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • Introduce a range of key oppositional works, practitioners, and movements, and situate them in their cultural and historical contexts;

  • Assist students to analyse the aesthetic innovations of the chosen media;

  • Explore important theoretical and political issues raised by the practitioners of the media under scrutiny;

  • Provide practice in critical reading of scholarly texts and media analysis;

  • Develop students’ ability to present their learning both orally and in writing;

  • Develop students’ ability to engage in collaborative activity
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • discuss a range of key oppositional works, practitioners, and movements;

  • demonstrate an ability to analyse the aesthetic innovations of the chosen media, and an understanding of the important theoretical and political issues raised by the practitioners of the media under consideration;

  • show an advanced ability to engage with scholarly texts and analyse media;

  • demonstrate learning both orally and in writing;

  • demonstrate the ability to work effectively in collaborative settings
