Topic description
This subject addresses the distribution of economic and cultural power in an increasingly globalised media environment, with an emphasis upon film, television and new media. It examines the rise and dominance of multi-national media conglomerates. It also investigates dynamics of regional media environments, using Greater China and the Asia Pacific region as case studies. We will consider current trends in the relationship between Eastern and Western hemispheres as determining influences upon global screen media culture.

Contact hours: Intensive Workshop - 5 hours, 5 times for one week

Tutorials - 2 hours, 2 times per week for two weeks
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with a opportunities to develop their critical thinking, specifically in relation to intercultural and international relations, focusing on the past, present and future of screen media

  • enhance students' ability to research a topic and organise their findings

  • encourage students to write persuasively, accurately and coherently

  • encourage students to take part in on-line discussions
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate a critical understanding of the ways in which multinational media corporations regulate the global flow of screen media

  • demonstrate a critical understanding of regional media dynamics, with an emphasis upon the Greater China and Asia Pacific Regions

  • describe political, economic and social factors that impact upon the relationship between the media cultures of the Eastern and Western hemispheres
