Topic description
In this topic students will be introduced to advanced camera techniques and strategies for shooting digital stories in tourism, archaeology, cultural heritage and underwater environments. Students will be exposed to digital story telling cinematography concepts and techniques, with opportunities to extend their knowledge while working collaboratively and creatively with their peers on problem-solving.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce students to the basic elements of documentary cinematography making

  • provide students with an understanding of the use of the camera for digital stories with an emphasis on production for tourism, archaeology, cultural heritage and underwater environments

  • introduce students to documentary camera technique, and the role of the cinematographer

  • provide students with an opportunity to view documentary films and discuss the cinematography

  • expose students to, and extend their knowledge of, digital story telling form

  • enable students to develop and complete short camera exercises

  • expose students to underwater housings and the opportunity to work with cameras in water
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to demonstrate:

  • a theoretical understanding of the role of the camera and cinematographer in documentary

  • a basic working knowledge of camera equipment

  • a basic understanding of the use of the camera in the production of digital stories for tourism, archaeology, cultural heritage and underwater environments

  • working familiarity with underwater cameras and housings

  • an increased understanding of the construction and structure in digital story telling
