Assignment(s)

This topic provides graduate students with skills in script development and writing, and development skills in script writing to be used in the major project.

The topic explores elements such as story, narrative, plot and character. A number of genres will be covered, including the development of scripts for documentaries and short films.

This topic aims to:

develop students’ abilities in manipulating narrative structures and assessing and interpreting characters for the develop of script writing for documentary and other short film.
Explore issues related to symbolism, genre and plot development in script writing
Allow students to work both individually and/or in a collaborative setting to develop a script for their major project
Examine the role of script writing, and the script writer, in the production of documentaries and other short films
examine the construction of classic narrative and alternative narrative form in short and long format films

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

critically analyse story, script structures, drama and character in documentaries and other short film form
identify, research, analyse and manipulate symbolism, motif, genre and film construction in the short film form
demonstrate technical and theoretical skills for script writing for short projects
analyse the role of scriptwriting and the scriptwriter as they relate to a range of film production contexts
demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of classic narrative and alternative narrative form in short and long format films
develop a synopsis, treatment, character breakdown and script for a short film
apply their knowledge of scriptwriting to write a short film script
