Bachelor of Social Work
Topic description
This is an introductory topic in which students develop skills in the analysis of social policy, including policy debates and policy making processes. The aim is to enable students to enhance their problem-solving skills and advocacy skills in the field of social policy.
Educational aims
This topic has the aim of introducing to the student the field of social policy. This includes reasons for social policy, how social policy is made and how social policy impacts on the lives of people with whom social workers and social planners work. A consideration is the ways in which social policy impacts on the roles and functions of social work and social planning.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic, it is expected that students will be able to:
- describe the key aspects of social policy making;
- question their own assumptions about social policy in the light of conflicting opinions and information;
- analyse critically current social policy proposals;
- develop a framework and grounding that will enable them to contribute to social policy development in their professional careers;
- write clearly, using evidence to support their arguments
