Master of Social Work; Graduate Certificate in Child Well-Being and Protection

In this topic students will be introduced to the situation of children worldwide, with particular emphasis on those living in the Global South, where children represent almost 40% of the total population. Complex issues such as child labour and trafficking, children in situations of war and conflict, international adoption, refugee and migrant children, and indigenous children will be examined critically in the light of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), the UN Millenium Development Goals (2000), and the UN Declaration on A World Fit for Children (2002). Many of Australia's refugee and migrant population from the Global South are familiar with or have personally experienced these threats to child well-being and protection. Students will be encouraged to explore solutions under the prism of their own professional study or practice.

The aim of the topic is to provide students with a broad overview of global issues affecting the welfare of children. They will be examined within the wider geopolitical, social, economic, cultural, and gender power relations.

Students successfully completing this topic will:

• Be able to identify, understand, and critically analyse the threats to child-wellbeing and protection globally;
• Be able to evaluate and appreciate what their particular professional study or practice can contribute to the creation of a world fit for children;
• Have enhanced cross-cultural knowledge, skills, and competencies.
