Topic description
This topic provides an in-depth analysis of a range of major sociological theorists, debates, or problems in sociological thought. Social theory has not only impacted dramatically upon the social sciences in recent years, it has also profoundly transformed the terms of public political debate in Australia, the UK, Europe, North America and Asia. The topic introduces and contextualizes the contributions of key contemporary social theorists, and may include coverage of such public intellectuals as Anthony Giddens, Ulrich Beck, Zygmunt Bauman, Julia Kristeva and Jurgen Habermas. This topic examines current debates in social theory with particular reference to the sociological relation between personal identity and social structure, the individual and culture. The wider import of social theory to society, culture and politics is also critically appraised.
