Topic description
This topic builds on the knowledge and skills that students have acquired in SPAN1201. Students will be given opportunities to expand on their understanding of spoken and written Spanish, as well as to develop their speaking and writing skills in Spanish.

In this topic students will to continue to improve their Spanish language skills. The topic will improve students' ability to communicate in basic Spanish with native speakers of the language by enabling students to increase the repertoire of basic information and scenarios that they are able to discuss both orally and in writing, Students will continue to use the language in real, meaningful situations, and to acquire the skills for effective listening, speaking, reading and writing in basic Spanish.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • engage students with further aspects of the Spanish language through continuous and graded speaking, listening, reading and writing activities

  • provide students with opportunities to extend their ability to use Spanish in natural, spontaneous and meaningful ways through participation in interactive activities

  • encourage students to learn independently and collaboratively in an anxiety-free environment

  • expand students' knowledge and awareness of the socio-cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • communicate in speech and writing in a greater range of personal and social contexts using basic Spanish

  • recognise and use a greater range of basic grammatical and syntactical structures and vocabulary

  • recognise and use a greater range of the main conventions of basic standard Spanish

  • obtain and provide a greater range services and information using basic speech and writing

  • extract information from short, simple written texts and spoken passages in Spanish

  • demonstrate an increased recognition of specific features of Hispanic culture: holidays, etiquette, traditions, gestures
