Topic description
This topic provides opportunities for students to develop communicative competence in Spanish as a second language. It consolidates and extends the knowledge and skills that students have previously acquired. Emphasis is placed on oral-aural comprehension, as well as on understanding and using both spoken and written Spanish. The focus is on the production of articulate language and on communicating independently with native speakers of Spanish, in formal and informal familiar, personal and academic contexts of use.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • review and expand Spanish grammatical structures and vocabulary acquired at previous levels

  • enhance communicative competence through participation in activities involving group or pair interaction

  • expose students to independent and collaborative learning and to language learning skill development

  • recognise and interpret socio-cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify the main points of clear standard speech and communicate in speech and writing on a range of personal and social topics using simple language

  • recognise and use grammatical, syntactical and lexical structures acquired throughout the semester

  • recognise and use specific Hispanic socio-cultural features
