Topic description
The topic deals in depth with specific linguistic conventions for many different text types, as they are produced by current professionals from the Arts and Science. This practical topic also provides opportunities for students to employ their language knowledge and skills in Spanish in the production of specific texts from a range of academic and professional practices. The topic enables students to acquire the specific skills to communicate effectively in their field of choice, both orally and in writing, as well as become proficient users of upper intermediate standard Spanish.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce students to a wide range of text types, genres and text conventions in Spanish, including academic, scientific, journalistic, and legal texts

  • develop students' awareness of linguistic features that are commonly found in formal, abstract and/or public language in Spanish, and develop strategies to use them

  • strengthen students' ability to read, write, and speak in Spanish, as necessary for this level of expression

  • provide opportunities for the students to develop their own personal style of expression in Spanish
Expected learning outcomes
Upon completion of the topic, students will be able to:

  • recognise and understand the structure and textual characteristics of many different text-types in Spanish, as they occur in the language currently produced in academic and scientific practices

  • consolidate and expand their knowledge of Spanish, and use it to produce texts in different genres

  • produce their own academic, scientific, or professional texts in Spanish, as required by their own interests or fields of practice

  • present an academic text in public, both orally and in writing
