Topic description
This topic provides opportunities for students to develop communicative competence in Spanish as a second language. It reviews, consolidates and extends the work done in previous topics. Emphasis is placed on oral-aural comprehension, as well as on understanding and using both spoken and written Spanish. The focus is on the production of articulate language and on communicating independently with native speakers of Spanish, in formal and informal contexts of use.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • consolidate and expand students' knowledge of Spanish grammatical structures and vocabulary acquired at previous levels

  • develop further students' communicative competence through participation in activities involving group or pair interaction

  • develop active participation in collaborative learning and foster independent language learning

  • recognise and interpret socio-cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • communicate in speech and writing on a range of social and political topics using grammatical, syntactical and lexical structures acquired throughout the semester

  • read and discuss authentic written and oral texts of moderate difficulty

  • recognise and use specific Hispanic socio-cultural features
