Topic description
The functional anatomy of the head, neck and thorax are covered in lectures and practicals. The embryology of the head and neck are also covered. The role of this anatomy in the production of speech is emphasised.
Educational aims
Upon completion of this course, students should;
- understand basic principles of anatomy and physiology.
- know the functional anatomy of the head and neck, especially the muscles of the tongue and jaw , the larynx and the cranial nerves.
- understand the functional anatomy of respiration, and how it contributes to speech.
- understand the anatomy of the special senses, sight and hearing.
- be familiar with the anatomy of the brain.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will;
- demonstrate a knowledge of embryology and genetics relevant to speech by completion of case based exercises
- demonstrate the ability to adopt and argue a position in a contentious topic in an area of relevance to this topic
- demonstrate practical knowledge of the anatomy and function of the head and neck region by being able to identify structures and their functions in practical classes
- demonstrate a theoretical knowledge of the respiratory and sensory processes relevant to communication science
- be prepared for the next topic on the Neuroscience of Speech
