Topic description
The emphasis of Speech Pathology Practicum 1 is on the practical application of the theory gained in the Professional Studies & Communication Sciences and Clinical Skills & Practice topics during years one and two of the program. This unit will introduce students to the basics of speech pathology management, through supervised practical experience with clients who have communication difficulties.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to:

  • Facilitate students' ability to apply the theory gained in the Professional Studies & Communication Sciences and Clinical Skills & Practice topics during years one and two of the program in a practical setting.

  • Introduce students to the basics of speech pathology management, through supervised practical experience with clients who have communication difficulties.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate 'novice' to 'intermediate' level competence in the practical skills taught and practiced during the academic teaching program and practicum

  2. Demonstrate progression in their ability to manage workplace tasks. Students may manage 2 - 4 client sessions per day, or equivalent degree of participation in a group intervention model

  3. Develop practical skills in generic professional competencies of reasoning, communication, lifelong learning and professionalism

  4. Develop practical skills in occupational competencies of assessment, analysis and interpretation, planning intervention and intervention

  5. Take responsibility for implementation of management plans with familiar clients

  6. Apply theory to practice with a range of clients with communication disorders

  7. Be actively involved in the management of clients presenting with communication difficulties under a high level of guidance and support by a speech pathology clinical educator

  8. Contribute to planning of client management in conjunction with their clinical educators and peers

  9. Relate theory to practice.
