Topic description
This topic provides students with the opportunity to investigate an area of theoretical knowledge in speech pathology practice in depth. The theoretical knowledge to understand a range of complex communication and swallowing disorders in adults will also be addressed.
Educational aims
This topic will extend previous knowledge and skills to speech pathology practice and research with adults who have complex communication and swallowing disorders.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be able to;

  • Critically analyse and evaluate the literature to make a case for an area of research and propose a well justified and specific research question.

  • Use key analytical frameworks such as the Ottawa Charter and International Classification of Function to identify the impact of communication and swallowing impairment.

  • Critically analyse and apply current models of best practice, decision making paradigms and ethical principles to develop assessment and intervention to address the needs of a client with complex communication and/or swallowing needs.

  • Explain how a speech pathologist and the inter professional team would involve the client/family in the decision-making process related to their care.
