Assessment
Assignment(s), Fieldwork
Topic description
The topic will involve an intensively taught field camp in a remote location to instruct students in field techniques relevant to the collection of spatial information. Students will attend the camp and complete activities in field mapping, surveying, vegetation and wildlife surveys, data collection using differential GPS and general map reading and interpretation skills.
Educational aims
This topic will complement the material delivered in Introduction to Geographical Information Systems through the teaching of practical skills related to the collection and analysis of field data for analysing using GIS. Students will complete activities in field mapping, surveying, vegetation and wildlife surveys, data collection using differential GPS and general map reading and interpretation skills. Following the field camp students will, under supervised study, analyse the data collected using GIS skills gained and prepare a report for submission to the teaching staff involved in delivering the topic.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Undertake a range of field mapping techniques relevant to spatial information systems

  2. Successfully use a surveying instrument to survey land surface and features

  3. Successfully use various Global Positioning Systems technologies to survey land surface and features

  4. Successfully quantify environmental change in the field

  5. Analyse field data using GIS and interpret the results of that analysis.
