Topic description
This topic introduces the Old Testament scriptures, focusing on interpreting them in light of their historical settings, literary forms and leading theological themes.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • gain a knowledge and understanding of the content, historical and geographical setting, literary forms and the leading theological themes of the Old Testament
  • have an understanding of the major types of critical study of the scriptures
  • develop skills in the study of the scriptures
  • have an appreciation of the meaning and significance of the Hebrew Scriptures for Jews and Christians

Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the topic students will have:

  • read a major part of the Old Testament
  • the ability to evaluate material and to present reasoned discussion to support an argument
  • the facility to deal with material which has diverse literary, historical and cultural backgrounds
  • discussed interpretive and theological issues in tutorials and have increased skills in working creatively and sensitively in a group
