Topic description
This topic is designed to introduce students to the foundations of theology through a study of the nature of faith, revelation and the discipline of Christian systematic theology. There will be discussion of the criteria and sources of theology and of its types and methods.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with opportunities to:

  • explore the foundations of theology
  • become familiar with key ideas of some of the leading figures in the history of theology
  • develop skills in theological method, in critically interpreting biblical and church texts, and in reading and evaluating contemporary theological works
  • work in tutorial groups to consolidate learning and share ideas with others
Expected learning outcomes
Students must demonstrate that they can:

  • summarise and explain the basic elements of theological foundations
  • identify issues that require further study and reflection
  • contribute to group learning in effective and collaborative ways
