Topic description
This topic aims to introduce students to contemporary theological thinking about the human person, and God's grace. It will include discussion of: the human person as created, the meaning of original sin and the nature of grace. The topic will build on the introductory material offered in THEO 1301 and provide a foundation for THEO 2314.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • introduce students to contemporary thinking on theological anthropology, creation and the doctrine of grace
  • explore a theological approach to human access to God in and through God's grace
  • provide an anthropological foundation for subsequent work on Christology
  • explore the relevance of these themes to Christian life in the world

Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • outline and describe ways in which the doctrine of grace has been understood in the theological tradition
  • compare and contrast differing contemporary and classical interpretations of theological anthropology, assessing their relevance for a contemporary understanding of what it is to be human
  • reflect critically on human 'experience' and on what it might mean to experience God as grace
