Topic description
To introduce the nature and function of theology at an introductory level and indicate the critical function of theology in the church and world. To introduce central teachings of the Christian faith, including, revelation, scripture, Trinity, doctrine of Christ, theological anthropology and ecclesiology and to demonstrate to students some of the ways in which these seemingly discrete doctrines are inter-related.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • introduce students to the nature and function of theology
  • examine a range of theological methods and their implications for wider doctrinal reflection
  • encourage a thoughtful examination of Christian theology with a view to being able to formulate a thoughtful and personal apologetic

Expected learning outcomes
Students will be able to:

  • identify the nature, sources and content of Christian theology at an introductory level
  • engage critically with a variety of contemporary approaches to theology
  • formulate a critical personal expression of Christian faith in contemporary culture
