Topic description
This topic provides an overview of the book of Romans, considering the form of the book, the main themes and its influence within the Christian church.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to help students:

  • acquire an understanding of the purpose, shape, style and content of Paul's letter to the Romans
  • gain insight into why this letter has been the most influential single document in Christian history
  • become familiar with the 'new perspective' on Paul
  • develop exegetical competence

Expected learning outcomes
After completing this topic, the student should be able to:

  • discuss in an informed manner the main themes of Romans, particularly righteousness, justification, faith, flesh and spirit
  • describe the reasons why the letter is, by and large, no longer a subject of contention between Catholics and Protestants
  • demonstrate exegetical competence
