Topic description
This topic combines biblical, historical, doctrinal and contemporary approaches to Jesus Christ and to salvation in Christ. It will include discussion of the theology of salvation in Christ in biblical, patristic, medieval, reformation and modern theologies.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • provide opportunities for students to survey biblical, historical, doctrinal and contemporary approaches to Jesus Christ
  • introduce students to the quest for the historical Jesus, the biblical foundation for Christology and developments up to and beyond the council of Chalcedon
  • reflect on the various approaches to salvation, biblical, patristic, medieval, reformation and modern
  • address the meaning of Jesus Christ for the third millennium in relation to the quest for justice and liberation, feminism, evolutionary biology, ecology and dialogue with other religious traditions

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • critically examine a Christological issue in depth, using a theoretical framework
  • present critical reflections on the information and ideas in lectures, readings and tutorials, and formulate their own opinion
  • compare and contrast the various approaches presented in class
  • articulate a theological argument or reflection
  • describe and critique the thesis of a Christological text
