Educational aims
  • to explore the genesis of the Uniting Church in Australia, the struggles in forming a new denomination, and the nature of its beliefs and structures
  • an exploration of the theology, distinctive characteristics, and declared mission of the Uniting Church in Australia
  • to examine the 'Basis of Union' document, with a view to ascertaining its theological position vis-a-vis other Christian denominations in Australia, the identification of the range of its missional activities, its place in the ecumenical movement, its interpretation of the relationship between gospel and justice, and the order of its various ministries

Expected learning outcomes
After completing this topic students will be able to:

  • describe thoroughly the origins, nature and purpose of the Uniting Church in Australia
  • identify the differences between the major Christian denominations of the Christian Church in Australia, and make some informed judgement about valid and invalid reasons for remaining separate or non-cooperative
  • express an appreciation and commitment to the ecumenical movement as a practical expression of God's act of reconciliation in Christ, and to understand Church union as an essential part of the gospel imperative
  • outline how the process that led to the formation of the Uniting Church was conceived as an attempt to answer the call of God to be so renewed so we may serve his purposes in Australia in our time and generation
  • describe the dilemma in the life and thought of the Christian Church of the conflict between Church traditions and the structure of mission, and to recognise the Uniting Church's attempt to witness to the gospel principle that structures must be the servant of mission
  • deepen our commitment to our own Church as a vehicle of God's continuing mission to the world in Christ
