Topic description
This topic introduces students to cross-cultural ministry, via presentation and consideration of the following matters: thinking about culture; biblical and theological underpinnings for cross-cultural ministry; becoming a multicultural church; experience of migrant congregations and pastoral care in cross-cultural situations; sharing property and developing intentional migrant congregations; second generation issues; cross-cultural and diaspora theology; and skills for cross-cultural ministry.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • allow the multicultural vision of the Kingdom of God to shape students' thinking and practice of ministry and mission
  • recognise the significance of culture and cultural identity and demonstrate awareness of the dynamics of cultural interaction and communication across cultures
  • understand the journey for Australian churches in becoming multi-cultural and the further steps required
  • identify skills and practical models for leadership, mission, ministry, pastoral care and worship in cross-cultural contexts

Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic, students will be able to:

  • reflect biblically and theologically on ministry and mission in contemporary multi-cultural Australia
  • articulate the history of immigration in Australia, the changing nature of Australian society, and strategies to overcome racism
  • articulate a vision for cross-cultural ministry
  • present different models for developing multi-cultural congregations and cross-cultural learning
