Topic description
Amidst the current thirst for spirituality, the Christian heritage of spirituality hardly gets considered. With society looking to the East, to native spiritualities and to pre-Christian European sources for wisdom, Christian traditions are being neglected. This topic considers the rich heritage of Christian spirituality, its historical development, and its relevance for Christianity today.
Educational aims
To consider the rich heritage of Christian spirituality, its historical development and its relevance to Christianity today
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic the student will be able to:

  • describe the contours of Christian spirituality in summary form
  • analyse a major theme in the history of Christian spirituality, e.g., the influence of Neo-platonism, with a view to interpreting the strengths and weaknesses in our contemporary experience of spirituality
