Topic description
The topic is designed to give an introduction to the Writings of the Hebrew Bible. The nature of biblical Hebrew Poetry will be explored along with the historical and cultural contexts which gave rise to these texts. In alternate years special attention will be given to the Book of Psalms, Job or the Song of Songs. A range of texts from the Writings will be selected for exegesis.
Educational aims
In this topic students will:

  • gain an appreciation of the distinctive nature of the Writings in the Hebrew Bible
  • develop their skills in exegesis and theology
  • develop skills in the critical evaluation of the scholarly literature in thefield of Biblical Studies
  • explore contemporary missional, preaching and liturgical implications of the Writings

Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the topic students will be able to:

  • recognise the literary and historical issues surrounding the Writings of the Hebrew Bible
  • demonstrate competence in exegesis, including the ability to select appropriate critical tools for the text
  • research, evaluate and present reasoned discussion in support of arguments
  • discuss the theology of a given text and be aware of issues with regard to application of the text to a contemporary context
