This topic is a study tour of the Middle East, prepared for by two day-long seminars and independent study. The aim is for students to gain an appreciation of the religious, political, economic and cultural milieu of Ancient Israel, and of Jesus and his followers in the first century. Through study in situ participants will become familiar with the geography and archaeology of Israel and the Middle East and develop an understanding of the milieu in which the Old and New Testaments were written.

The aims of this topic are to:

gain an appreciation of the cultural milieu of the Mediterranean world in which the Bible was written
appreciate ancient and early Christian sites which will illuminate participants' intelligent reading of the biblical texts and early Church documents
identify the different cultural scripts of contemporary Westerners and ancient circum-Mediterranean people
learn about the geography and history of the Bible
appreciate the different faith and cultural communities in the Middle East
to understand and map the growth of early Christianity

On completion of this topic, participants should be able to:

recognise of different cultural, social and religious values that people bring into theological conversation
identify relevant primary and secondary sources
interpret key texts foundational for the Christian Church
interpret historical movements that shaped human beings
recognise the implications of study and travel in the Middle East
explain an understanding of other monotheistic traditions
