Topic description
This topic introduces students to the terminology, sources, and methods of moral reasoning that characterise the discipline of Christian Ethics. The ways in which Christian faith transforms philosophical ethics will be explored with reference to the nature of moral experience, the use of the Bible, understandings of freedom, conscience, moral norms, and the human person.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • become familiar with the terminology, methods, and sources of Christian Ethics
  • appreciate the key elements in the foundations of Christian Ethics
  • develop the skills of critical reflection and the application of moral insights to concrete moral situations
  • work collaboratively with others and gain an appreciation of the variety of moral stances, traditions, and processes

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify the major sources of ethical positions both philosophically and theologically
  • use a method of moral reasoning to evaluate a range of ethical issues
  • recognise the variety of viewpoints in the Christian moral tradition
  • contribute to group learning in effective and collaborative ways
