Topic description
This topic introduces participants to the theology of the church and its ministries. It includes biblical, systematic and pastoral approaches to a range of key issues, and involves a critical study of the work of contemporary theologians as well as a number of Church documents.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce students to a study of the Christian church and its ministries by way of a biblical, systematic and pastoral approach
  • engage in a critical study of the work of contemporary theologians as well as a number of church documents (e.g., of the Second Vatican Council)
  • examine fundamental issues, such as whether Jesus founded a church; and contemporary issues, such as women and men in collaborative ministry
  • discuss ecumenical issues and the way towards unity

Expected learning outcomes
Students who have completed this topic will be able to:

  • demonstrate that they can reflect critically on major church documents, outlining their understanding of the nature of the church and its ministries
  • conduct critical and sustained research in key areas of ecclesiology
  • reflect critically on contemporary issues in church and ministry
