Topic description
This topic is an introduction to the theological study of the nature and mission of the Christian Church, Christian ministries lay and ordained, and to the celebration of the Christian sacraments.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce students to the theological study of the nature and mission of the Christian Church, Christian ministries lay and ordained, and to the celebration of the Christian sacraments
  • enable students to develop a more critical understanding of their own religious traditions and a deeper appreciation of traditions other than their own
  • enhance students' personal participation in religious communities, in leadership and in religious rituals and celebrations
  • equip students to offer more informed leadership in religious communities

Expected learning outcomes
It is expected that as a result of work in this topic, students will be able to:

  • outline the major historical developments in the understanding of the Christian Church, its patterns of participation and leadership, and its sacramental practice
  • reflect critically on this history and apply to it contemporary Christian thought and practice
  • critically reflect on contemporary religious practices
  • develop skills for leadership in religious communities
