Topic description
This topic is an introduction to the theological study of the nature and mission of the Christian Church, Christian ministries lay and ordained, and to the celebration of the Christian sacraments.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce students to the theological study of the nature and mission of the Christian Church, Christian ministries lay and ordained, and to the celebration of the Christian sacraments
  • enable students to understand their own religious traditions and to develop an appreciation of traditions other than their own
  • enhance students' personal participation in religious communities and in religious rituals and celebrations
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • outline the major historical developments in the understanding of the Christian Church, its patterns of participation and leadership, and its sacramental practice
  • discuss the history of the Christian church and connections with contemporary Christian thought and practice
  • discuss and analyse contemporary religious practices
  • develop skills for participation in religious communities
