Topic description
A thesis of not more than 20,000 words. The thesis may be a critical survey of existing knowledge or an original contribution to the subject. In either case it should demonstrate the student's ability to collect and evaluate information; to test and defend an argument or thesis; and to examine critically the major theories in the area of enquiry.
Educational aims
To provide training in a manner that fosters the development of a candidate's independent research skills, and to develop the attributes associated with research practice.
Expected learning outcomes
Students who have successfully completed this topic will be able to:

  • locate and make appropriate use of relevant source materials
  • analyse sources, develop arguments and draw conclusions
  • contribute to knowledge through independent research
  • exercise scholarly judgement
  • present clearly a scholarly thesis (including definition of questions, organisation of material, clarity of writing style)
  • select and justify appropriate methodology
