Topic description
This topic gives an overview of the books of the Old Testament. Major writings are explored and seminars look at some of these texts in detail with the purpose of discussing significant aspects of them. Contemporary exegetical methodologies are utilised in the process of the seminars.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • gain a knowledge and understanding of the content and historical and cultural settings of the Old Testament
  • gain an understanding of the forms and literary styles of the writings
  • be introduced to major approaches to the critical study of the Old Testament
  • develop skills in the study of the Scriptures
  • explore main theological themes in a selection of Old Testament texts
  • explore meaning and the significance of the Scriptures for contemporary readers

Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the topic students will have:

  • read a major part of the Old Testament
  • applied critical methodology to a selection of biblical texts
  • discussed interpretive and theological issues in seminars
  • gained a knowledge of historical and cultural issues that pertain to the texts
  • explored theological meaning in selected biblical texts
  • gained an understanding of the significance and relevance of these texts for contemporary readers
