Topic description
This topic provides foundational study in the Prophets of Israel. It will examine critically the prophet's role in Israel's society, and the role of the prophetic literature in ancient and contemporary contexts. In depth attention will be given to particular books from which passages for exegesis will be selected.
Educational aims
In this topic students will:

  • examine the role of the prophets in the society of ancient Israel in the period from the beginning of the monarchy to the post-exilic years

  • develop skills in the critical analysis of texts through exegesis

  • develop skills in the critical evaluation of the scholarly literature in the field of Biblical Studies

  • evaluate the role of the prophetic literature in understanding a range of theological messages, in both ancient and contemporary contexts
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic the students will be able to:

  • discuss the literary and historical issues surrounding the prophetic literature critically

  • demonstrate advanced skills in exegesis, including the ability to select appropriate critical tools for the text

  • research, evaluate and present reasoned discussion in support of arguments at an advanced level

  • examine the theology of a given text and be able to apply it to a range of contemporary contexts critically
