Topic description
This topic is an introduction to the theology of Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ. It will include a study of the historical Jesus, the Christologies of the Gospels, the Council of Chalcedon, and contemporary theologies of Jesus Christ, including theologies of liberation, ecological theology and inter-religious dialogue.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • make students familiar with the fundaments of the study of Christian theology by seeking to interpret the meaning of Jesus Christ for the 21st Century

  • introduce the four gospels as 'living memories' of Jesus

  • analyse and interpret the meaning of the death and resurrection of Jesus

  • introduce students to various approaches to the theology of salvation

  • analyse critically Jesus in the light of contemporary concerns, e.g., liberation theology, feminist theology, other religious traditions, ecology and contemporary evolutionary biology
Expected learning outcomes
After completing this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate that they can summarise and analyse critically the Christological texts

  • expound and reflect upon at least one substantive issue in Christology, outlining its relevance for the contemporary world

  • demonstrate, by using the tools of theological reflection, the contemporary relevance of Jesus by engaging with at least one of the contemporary concerns, i.e., liberation theology, feminist theology, other religions, ecology, or evolutionary biology
