Topic description
This topic combines biblical, historical and doctrinal approaches to the study of eschatology. An introduction will be given to the place of eschatology in the study of theology and the eschatological thought expressed in contemporary theologies of hope. Attention will be given to the questions of death, life after death, Parousia and last judgement.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • introduce students to a combination of biblical, historical and doctrinal approaches to the study of eschatology
  • provide an introduction to the place of eschatology in the study of theology, as expressed in various contemporary theologies of hope
  • introduce students to the issues of corporate and personal eschatology through the questions of death, life after death, Parousia and last judgement

Expected learning outcomes
Students who have completed this topic will be able to:

  • evaluate an understanding of the importance of hope as a part of Christian faith
  • analyse the complex and varied eschatological and historical emphases embedded in the Scriptures
  • situate the human person as the locus of history, destiny and hope
