Topic description
This topic introduces participants to the history of religious art and theological analysis of the arts. It views the arts as cultural forms that are able to express, illuminate and inspire faith, and that contribute to understandings and experiences of spirituality. The insights of the arts apply to individuals and communities, in the past and present.
Educational aims
Ths aims of this topic are to:

  • investigate historical developments in religious art, especially in the Western Christian tradition
  • acquire an understanding of the potential dialogue between the arts and theology
  • develop an ability to engage artistic creations with theological and aesthetic principles

Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • recognise the value and contributions of the arts to society, culture and spirituality - in the past and present
  • demonstrate and understanding of the exchange between art and theology
  • appropriate and interpret the arts theologically
