Topic description
This topic provides students with skills and knowledge to develop, assess and evaluate strategic planning initiatives within the area of Christian leadership. It provides specialised skills in professional practice to develop effective leadership within a range of contemporary church contexts.

Areas that will be investigated and evaluated may include development and articulation of goals and visions, skills in strategic thinking, resourcing ministry, and the establishment and implementation of evaluation systems.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
  • provide students with the critical, analytical and planning skills to implement leadership and management goals within the area of Christian leaderships
  • develop the critical and cognitive skills to apply evaluation frameworks to individual areas of practice
  • review and analyse theoretical frameworks related to contemporary Christian leadership
  • reflect theologically on the implications of applying theoretical frameworks to Christian leadership, and their relationship with power and authority structures
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
  • articulate and analyse a personal philosophy of leadership and management in dialogue with Christian theological understandings and perspectives
  • evaluate critically a range of approaches to leadership, comparing concepts and styles
  • identify the role of a Christian leader in relation to strategic planning including vision, goals, programming and evaluation
  • articulate the value and contribution that systems theory can make to a Christian organisation
  • reflect on the nature of decision-making, particularly in relation to the leader’s style and personality as well as the use of power and authority
