Topic description
This topic explores the practices, images and theological themes of a practical theology of chaplaincy. Students will develop the art of care and mission as it pertains to chaplaincy in contemporary Australian settings.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with:
- exposure to the theology and practice of chaplaincy from a variety of perspectives and approaches
- an inclusive setting for exploring theological and practical perspectives in chaplaincy
- opportunities for reflection on various frameworks within practical theology, and the implications of these for contemporary practice
- an opportunity to create and share a personal theology of chaplaincy
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
- Critically discuss and evaluate academic literature on the theology and practice of chaplaincy.
- Discuss the complexity of relationship between the ‘human person’ and the ‘divine’, with particular emphasis on the marginalised and institutionalised person.
- Demonstrate effective pastoral theological skill grounded in critical reflection with persons in care.
- Articulate and critique a personal theology of chaplaincy, through visual, verbal and/or written demonstration in two or more institutional settings.
