Topic description
This topic provides foundational knowledge related to cross-cultural ministry. Students will develop critical skills in: evaluating biblical and theological underpinnings for cross-cultural ministry; understanding changes to the cultural landscape of Australia over time and the implications of these for ministry in the church and engagement with wider society (including racism); evaluating personal attitudes and possible practices for growing a genuinely intercultural church community; developing knowledge and skills for effective leadership and pastoral care of a multicultural church.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • identify and evaluate a range of cross-cultural perspectives, in relation to church and individual practice, to allow students to critically analyse their own approach to ministry and mission

  • recognise the significance of culture and cultural identity and demonstrate awareness of the dynamics of cultural interaction and communication across cultures

  • Investigate historical, contemporary, and possible future changes within Australian church contexts, in response to social and political developments in the broader community

  • provide students with the analytical skills to identify and critique practical models for leadership, mission, ministry, pastoral care and worship in multicultural contexts
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic, students will be able to:

  • reflect critically, biblically and theologically, on ministry and mission in contemporary multi-cultural Australia

  • articulate and analyse critically the implications of changes to the cultural landscape of Australia over time for society and church, exploring how such things as racism have developed and been outworked

  • develop and evaluate strategies for effective leadership and pastoral care of a multicultural church

  • explore how the church today might help to promote a society that genuinely respects and engages all people

  • communicate verbally and in writing for a range of audiences
