This topic provides a background to, and knowledge of cross-cultural ministry. Students will develop critical skills in: evaluating biblical and theological underpinnings for cross-cultural ministry; understanding changes to the cultural landscape of Australia over time and the implications of these for ministry in the church and engagement with wider society; possible practices for growing a genuinely intercultural church community; developing knowledge and skills for effective leadership and pastoral care within a multicultural church.

This topic aims to:

identify and evaluate a range of cross-cultural ministry critically, reflect upon the theological frameworks of each student's approach to ministry practice, recognise the significance of culture and cultural identity, and show the impact that cultural identity has upon interaction and communication across cultural groups
investigate historical, contemporary, and possible future changes within Australian church contexts, in response to social and political developments in the broader community
provide students with the analytical skills to identify and critique practical models for leadership, mission, ministry, pastoral care and worship in multicultural contexts

On completing this topic, students will be able to:

reflect critically, biblically and theologically, on ministry and mission in contemporary multi-cultural Australia
elaborate strategies for developing a community that acknowledges and values the cultural contributions of different groups.
demonstrate the ability to communicate a theological basis for the respect of all cultures and people groups
