Topic description
The subject of reconciliation is key to Christian theology. This topic explores, and analyses theologies of alienation and reconciliation. The relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Australia, and how these impact on issues of reconciliation will be addressed.In some years, a field trip may be organised to visit an Indigenous community.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:
- explore the concept of alienation as a theology of sinfulness and reconciliation as a soteriological device and outcome
- reflect on Australia as a colonised/invaded nation, and how the history of post-colonial Australia affects the relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians
- discern how theology can inform the ongoing social and political debate about reconciliation
Expected learning outcomes
At the conclusion of this topic students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the biblical and theological basis of theologies of alienation and reconciliation
- analyse critically the works of key theologians on the issues of alienation and reconciliation
- apply these theological concepts to the history of relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and consider practical strategies for reconciliation which can overcome alienation
