Topic description
This topic provides a foundation in Biblical Hebrew vocabulary and grammar. Through the examination of Hebrew Biblical texts students will learn to read and translate some passages of the Biblical text, using basic lexicographical aids. The connection between translation and theological interpretation of texts will be introduced.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • provide foundational skills in, and knowledge of, Biblical Hebrew

  • learn how to understand grammar, with a focus on verbal forms

  • read and translate a selection passages from the Hebrew Bible

  • learn how to use lexicographical aids to assist in translation and parsing

  • identify the sounds and thought processes of Biblical Hebrew, and develop skills in the pronunciation of spoken Biblical Hebrew
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the topic students will be able to demonstrate:

  • the acquisition of basic knowledge of the Hebrew alphabet and its pronunciation

  • the acquisition of a basic Hebrew vocabulary

  • the ability to recognise the fundamentals of Hebrew grammar

  • the acquisition of skills in reading from the Hebrew Bible

  • the acquisition of the skills to use biblical commentaries that refer to the Hebrew text analytically

  • the requisite skills and vocabulary to translate short passages from the Hebrew Bible, with appropriate lexicographical aids

  • the ability to translate a selection of passages from the Hebrew Bible
