Topic description
This topic involves the writing of a dissertation under the supervision of an appropriate staff member. The dissertation should give evidence of the student's ability to collect and evaluate material in the form of an extended literature review of a subject. It should also evidence an ability to construct and defend an argument and critically examine theories in the area of enquiry.
Educational aims
To provide training in a manner that fosters the development of a candidate's independent research skills, and to develop the attributes associated with research practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students should be able to:

  • locate and make appropriate use of relevant source materials
  • analyse sources, develop arguments and draw conclusions
  • contribute to knowledge through independent research
  • exercise scholarly judgement
  • present clearly a scholarly thesis (including definition of questions, organisation of material, clarity of writing style)
  • select and justify appropriate methodology
